Advantages And Applications Of Design Thinking

Presenter:
Steven Simpson

Much has been written and said about “what” innovation is; however, we don’t just stumble into innovation and it doesn’t really happen within a classroom, boardroom or focus group facility. Design thinking provides practical approaches on “how” to innovate, by establishing a process and set of necessary conditions for breakthrough thinking to occur. Design thinking doesn’t take major resource investments to employ, and has been successfully utilized in designing the smallest process improvements to the most ambitious of inventions.

Unlike many research practices which seek to validate ideas or solutions that have already been formulated, design thinking utilizes empathetic and ethnographic approaches to uncover unmet needs and inspire new ideas through unique insights that are rarely captured in an artificial environment or survey. Practitioners of design thinking employ a specific mindset to be able to identify jobs to be done, and then a nimble process for synthesizing insights, brainstorming, prototyping and testing solutions. The techniques can be practically and meaningfully applied to formal projects or daily tasks.

Three key learnings that you will take away from this program:
  1. Understand the principles and value of design thinking.
  2. Real life examples of how design thinking has been successfully used.
  3. How to apply design thinking principles and practices in your projects and day-to-day activity.
