Get ready to make things happen!

By David Powe, RPCN President

John F. Kennedy once said: “Things do not happen. Things are made to happen.” As I begin my term as president of RPCN, I would like to emphasize this to everyone in our organization. We have just finished a very successful year for RPCN and the board has adopted an aggressive strategic plan for this year.  Now it’s up to our membership to get involved and “make it happen.” We need you to get involved in one of our standing or ad-hoc committees.

You can view the list of standing committees on the RPCN website. There is probably a committee to suit whatever your interest is, and we would be happy to have you join any of them. However, we really could use some help on the Membership Committee. We are also looking for someone to lead the Conference Committee in planning our next conference, which we expect to hold in fall 2016, and to lead our member and external survey efforts. Please contact me or one of our officers if you have an interest in joining any of our committees.

Being part of a committee is another way to enhance your experience in RPCN. It is in these committees where we “make things happen” in the organization. And you will have a chance to build stronger relationships with some of your colleagues in the organization as well.

Get involved! Stay involved! You won’t regret it.

Making your business better

Can you identify formal and informal leaders in your organization? Beth Sears describes how you can create a culture "which recognizes, rewards and values teamwork." Read her Democrat and Chronicle Nextpert column, “Change = Great Work.”

Retaining non-essential emails, documents and files is not recommended by Sitima Fowler, co-CEO of Capstone, a computer support company. In her article, “Five Cybersecurity Tips to Help Protect Your Business,” she explains that "if your network is ever hacked then all these stored emails and documents will be exposed."

Incubators can be opportunities for the savvy consultant to find additional business. Silicon Valley and Sand Hill Road have become synonymous with incubating the creation of dynamic new businesses in the IT arena since the 1960s. Universities have used the Silicon Valley incubator model to attempt to monetize their professors’ and students’ research. Shertok will describe why and how we got to this place, whether the incubator model is truly valid and where we need to go from here.
